When hair is allowed to mat and tangle into strands that resemble rope, dreadlocks naturally emerge. With Samson’s uncontrolled hair growth, this could have happened over time.

Did Samson Have Dreadlocks
Samson’s iconic association with dreadlocks dates back to artwork from the mid-1800s. Samson is shown in paintings like James Tissot’s “Samson and the Lion” (1886–1896) with long, knotted dreadlocks.
Subsequent motion pictures, such as Victor Mature’s Technicolor 1949 picture “Samson and Delilah,” solidified this portrayal in popular culture. Few people questioned this clichéd picture after it gained traction. Is it accurate historically, though?
Among the most well-known characters in the Bible is Samson. God gave him extraordinary physical power, and he presided over Israel as a judge for 20 years (Judges 15:20). In popular culture, Samson is frequently portrayed as having long hair styled in dreadlocks.
In most vintage films and artwork, Samson is shown as having lengthy, matted dreadlocks. The specifics of Samson’s haircut are never explained in the Bible. It just says that Samson was forbidden from cutting his hair because he was a Nazirite:
You are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. And no razor will ever touch his head since the infant will be a Nazirite to God from the moment of conception. (NKJV, Judges 13:5)
Nazirites such as Samson made a unique vow of devotion to the service of God. This promise included the commitment to refrain from cutting one’s hair while pledging (Numbers 6:5).
Samson would have worn his hair fairly long based on this. However, the assumption that his long hair was in organized dreadlocks stems more from societal conceptions of what an unshorn “wild man” hero would look like than from artistic license.
The life of Samson, his experiences, and all he went through reveal to us the state of a man who made decisions based only on his feelings. Samson’s braids each stood for something he had to avoid to fulfill his divine mission.

Could Dreadlocks Have Formed From Samson’s Long Hair?
Samson’s hair would have grown long if he had not taken the Nazarite vow to shave his hair off at birth. When it is eventually cut, the Bible says it weighs seven “braids,” or locks (Judges 16:19). What kind of style did his long hair probably take on?
The dreadlocks naturally occur when hair is allowed to mat and tangle into thick, tangled strands. They develop as a result of disregard and improper brushing or combing. Unchecked, coarse, curly, or kinky hair will eventually fuse into thick rope-like locks.
Samson was an ideal candidate for dreadlocks since he was an Israelite guy and probably had thick, black, curly hair.
His hair type would allow it to tangle into knotted groups over time if he adhered to his Nazirite pledge and neglected to take care of it. It is, therefore, plausible to assume that Samson ultimately, by sheer carelessness, acquired something akin to dreadlocks.

Whether genuine dreadlocks as we know them now might have developed spontaneously in the ancient Middle East is a topic of significant discussion.
According to some, the region’s frequent usage of bone combs and exposure to olive oil would have prevented matted hair.
However, others contend that historical Israelites such as Samson could have continued wearing early dreadlocks. It’s difficult to say whether Samson’s hair fell into the perfectly styled dreadlocks that are frequently shown.
